Before you use this checklist
If you keep Atlas Copco stationary air compressors running, this checklist is for you. I'm a maintenance planner, and I've been handling compressor service orders for 11 years. I've personally made (and documented) three significant mistakes, totaling roughly $12k in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist to prevent others from repeating my errors.
This is a 7-step checklist. Run it before you replace a filter element, and you'll avoid the dumb mistakes I've already made.
What this checklist is not for: Bunsen burner gas systems, lab exhaust, or the AIO vs air cooler debate for a PC. Different airflow problem. If you landed here from one of those searches, this page won't help you. But the habit of checking specs before buying is universal.
Why filter specs matter more than the part number
What most people don't realize is that the number stamped on an old filter is not always the number you should order. Atlas Copco has revised filter part numbers without changing the basic canister size. Same threads, same height, different media.
Why does this matter? Because a replacement filter that looks identical might have a different micron rating, moisture removal rating, or internal sealing arrangement. On a normal shop compressor, that may not hurt anything. On an oil-free unit feeding a process, it can ruin product. I learned this the hard way in 2022.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: aftermarket filters can be perfectly good, but equivalent is not the same as identical. Do not assume. Check.

Step 1: Identify the exact model and serial number
Don't trust the label on the front of the canopy. Use the data plate on the compressor package. Write down the model, the serial number, and the manufacturing year. If the plate is unreadable, call your local Atlas Copco support before you order anything.
Checkpoint: the model number on paper should match the model number on the package. It sounds obvious. It isn't.
Step 2: Pull the parts list from the manual, not from memory
Find the service manual for your specific compressor revision. The manual lists the current genuine filter part number, plus the alternative if one exists. This is where you'll find the official Atlas Copco air filter specifications: micron rating, max flow, operating temperature, and oil carryover limits.
Don't use a generic parts list from a third-party website. Use the manual from Atlas Copco or your local authorized distributor. If you can't find it, ask. That takes five minutes. Ordering the wrong filter takes five seconds.
Step 3: Verify the revision level before touching the old filter
This is the step most people skip. A compressor that left the factory in 2015 may have been updated several times. The original parts list may no longer be current. Look for revision notes in the manual, and check the current filter part number against anything already installed. If the last maintenance crew installed a different revision, you need to know that before you order a matching replacement. (Mental note: verify, then order.) I skipped this in 2017, and the filter I ordered didn't seat correctly. That cost $890 in rework and a week of downtime.
The filter failure in July 2023 changed how I think about spec verification. One wrong part number, and suddenly redundancy didn't seem like overkill.
Step 4: Read the actual air filter specifications
Match at least these specs:
- Micron rating (absolute or nominal)
- Media type (coalescing, particulate, or combination)
- Max operating pressure and temperature
- Oil removal rating if the compressor is oil-lubricated
- Flow capacity at your compressor's discharge rating
If the filter is aftermarket, ask for the datasheet. If the seller can't produce one, walk away. No datasheet, no order.
Step 5: Measure the pressure drop across the old filter
Before you swap anything, check the differential pressure reading on the filter housing or maintenance app. This tells you whether the old filter actually reached its limit. A filter can look fine on the outside and be completely choked. A new element might not solve a pressure drop problem if the real issue is the separator or the intake ventilation.
Do this while the unit is running at normal load. Write the number down. Compare it to the limit in the service manual. This data makes the next checkup more useful, and it's the single most ignored step in our industry. Period.
Step 6: Order the correct quantity, plus one
If the compressor is critical, order two elements when your interval is close. Filter elements fail at inconvenient times. Having a spare already verified in stock is cheap insurance. This isn't a sales pitch. It's arithmetic. One unscheduled shutdown costs more than the extra filter.
But do not buy in bulk without checking storage life. Seals degrade. Filters sitting in a hot warehouse for years are not the same as fresh stock. Ask for manufacturing dates if the shelf life matters.
Even after choosing the OEM filter this time, I kept second-guessing. What if the aftermarket option was actually fine? The two weeks until delivery were stressful. But once it was installed and the pressure drop stayed normal, I relaxed.
Step 7: Log the replacement in your maintenance record
Record the installation date, running hours, part number, revision, supplier, and the pressure drop you measured. If the next technician asks why a filter works differently, they'll have the answer. If you don't log it, you're repeating the same guessing game next year.
After the third wrong-part delivery in Q1 2024, I set up a shared spreadsheet. We started catching mismatched parts before installation. We've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months.
Common mistakes I've made, so you don't have to
Mistake 1: Ordering by the filter housing label
In my first year (2017), I did this. The old filter had a part number that had been superseded. The new one arrived, looked right, and didn't fit. The vendor took it back, but the reorder cost us a week. That's the expensive way to learn that labels aren't specs.
Mistake 2: Trusting a recommended service interval from a blog
Generic intervals are guesses. Your intake air can be dustier than the test condition, or your compressor can run in a cleaner room than the manual assumes. The manual gives a baseline, but the real trigger is differential pressure. As of January 2025, our shop still sees filters fail early when someone followed a calendar interval instead of a condition-based check.
Mistake 3: Assuming aftermarket equivalent means exact
Some aftermarket filters are excellent. Some aren't. You can buy an equivalent filter, as long as you verify the Atlas Copco air filter specifications against the aftermarket datasheet. Equivalent is not a warranty word. If the aftermarket brand refuses to provide the datasheet, that's your answer.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the red flag phrases
If a salesperson says guaranteed zero maintenance, hang up. There is no such thing as a zero-maintenance compressor. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims have to be truthful and substantiated. Zero maintenance isn't. Not in this industry.
The honest limitation
This checklist works for stationary compressor filter replacements. If you're dealing with a portable diesel-powered unit on a demolition site, some steps stay the same, but the intervals and filter specs will differ.
