If you're seeing water at your air tools, the problem is usually condensation in the receiver, an undersized dryer, or an automatic drain that isn't draining. In one 2024 visit, a customer had spent $900 on two crawl space dehumidifiers trying to dry their sandblasting air. The actual fix was a $600 refrigerated air dryer and a $50 automatic drain. The dehumidifiers were relocated to the crawl space they were meant for.

Why Is There Water in My Air Lines? Is the Air Filter the Problem?

Usually not. The intake filter is there to stop particles, not water. If there's water at the tool, check the receiver drain first. I've seen automatic drains left closed because someone thought they were the emergency shutoff. That one mistake caused a whole plant's air lines to fill with rust-colored water.

The air filter is not the answer doesn't mean it's unimportant. A dirty or backwards filter can create low intake pressure, which makes the compressor work harder. But water in the lines is a dryer and drain problem, not a filter problem.

Start with the drain. Then check the dryer. Then call a tech.

What Maintenance Mistakes Cause Repeat Repairs?

From my mistake log, the top repeat offenders are: wrong oil, a dirty separator, a blocked air filter, and not resetting the service interval on the controller. In September 2022, I changed the oil on a GA 37 and forgot to reset the service reminder. The controller shut the machine down at the next interval—convinced the oil was overdue.
