I know this will sound strange coming from someone whose job is to watch costs: for a small company, choosing the least expensive compressor can be one of the most expensive decisions you will make.

So my advice to other small buyers is to reframe the question. Don't ask, “which compressor is the least expensive?” Ask, “who will support this system for the next ten years, and is this quote for a machine or for a working compressed air installation?” If a supplier acts like your order is too small to deserve proper answers, treat that as a warning. If they ask how you use the air before they quote you, listen, even when the price makes you wince. That is how our “overpriced” compressor turned out to be the best purchase I signed all year.
